Fiber Bragg Gratings have a wide range of applications in optical communications, laser technology, and sensing systems. They are commonly used as in-fiber mirrors or optical filters with narrowband spectral characteristics. FBGs also serve as sensitive elements for measuring strain and temperature.

Apodized Fiber Bragg Gratings feature a specially designed profile of the induced refractive index and grating strength along the grating length. This apodization significantly reduces the side lobe levels compared to uniform gratings, improving spectral performance. Various apodization profiles allow optimization of key FBG parameters such as reflectivity, full width at half maximum (FWHM), and side lobe suppression ratio (SLSR).

Apodized FBGs are widely employed in sensing applications, signal filtering, Brillouin scattering suppression, and more. Typical SLSR values for different grating strengths range from -10 dB to -30 dB. The reflection spectrum of apodized high-reflectivity (HR) FBGs is illustrated in the accompanying graph.
